Rosenthal: Chaos looms! Assessing the races for divisions, wild cards and individual awards
New York TimesWith three weeks remaining in the regular season, five of the six teams in first place stand at least an 88 percent chance of winning their division. Many of the top awards races also are in question – even AL MVP, which still should go to Shohei Ohtani, but not without at least a bow to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. A look at where things stand: NL West Giants remaining schedule: SD 4, ATL 3, @SD 3, @COL 3, AZ 3, SD 3. Opponents’ combined winning percentage:.464 Cardinals remaining schedule: @NYM 3, SD 3, @MIL 4, @CHC 4, MIL 3, CHC 3. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might win the old-fashioned Triple Crown – he’s first in the AL in batting average, tied for first in home runs and five short of the league lead in RBIs. He also might win the slash-line Triple Crown – in addition to being first in batting average, he’s first in on-base percentage and second by one point in slugging percentage.
