In case of very early detection of cancer in the pre-palpable, pre-visual stage, cure to the extent of 80 per cent to 90 per cent is possible. The use of specific tumour markers can identify women at high risk of breast cancer. Extensive screening programmes involving thousands of women in affluent countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States have documented significant benefits in terms of both early detection and improved survival in the case of breast cancer for women over 40. Advances in various areas of basic research have been responsible for advances in prevention and early detection as in Pap smear, mammography, evaluation of cancer susceptibility, tumour markers and therapeutic care.
