Economic growth shouldn’t have to suffer for want of a market solution
Live MintThere is an old ditty that India’s struggle with inflation brings to mind: For want of a nail the shoe was lost / For want of a shoe the horse was lost / For want of a horse the rider was lost / For want of a rider the message was lost / For want of a message the battle was lost / For want of a battle the kingdom was lost / And all for the want of a horseshoe nail. For want of control over some vegetable prices, India’s economic growth is repressed. The government cannot control vegetable prices, except by measures like export bans that depress sowing and guarantee shortages and higher prices in the following harvest season. Decentralized food-processing has the added advantage of slashing India’s notoriously high crop damage and post-harvest losses, thereby increasing total supply. If India Inc launches a nationwide campaign to drive behavioural change in kitchens, processed ingredients could sell in sufficient volumes for bulk substitution to plug gaps in fresh-veggie supply and crush price volatility—and make monetary policy easier to conduct.
