Report finds federal government failings likely contributed to Ruby Princess COVID-19 disaster

Failings by a federal government border agency likely contributed to the deadly Ruby Princess COVID-19 disaster, a major report has found. Key points: The Commonwealth's Inspector-General of Biosecurity conducted a review of the Ruby Princess disaster Its report found the federal agriculture department made a number of mistakes, including not interviewing sick passengers The report said it was "perplexing" the department was not more prepared after the Diamond Princess incident in Japan The scathing audit has exposed further errors from when the virus-plagued ship returned to Sydney last March and passengers were allowed to disembark. Rob Delane says "a whole lot of deficiencies" within the agriculture department likely contributed to the Ruby Princess incident. The Inspector-General's Ruby Princess report said it was "perplexing" the agriculture department was not more prepared after watching COVID spread aboard the Diamond Princess ship in Japan. Mr Littleproud conceded his department "could do better" but insisted "failings by NSW Health" caused the Ruby Princess incident.
