Volkswagen has teased it latest electric car due to go on sale in 2027 - and it will genuinely be an affordable option. Volkswagen has revealed a small urban electric car dubbed the ID.1 that will cost just £17,000 Volkswagen's claim that it will cost from €20,000 would make it the cheapest EV in the car makers range by over £5,000. What we know about the ID.1 Originally, VW had been working alongside Renault as part of a joint venture to share costs on the development of ID.1 with the French firm's own Twingo EV. As such, ID.1 is now likely to be built on a chopped-down version of VW’s MEB electric car platform that’s also being used to underpin ID.2. With EVs traditionally commanding high production costs, use of the shared platform might be how VW is going to make this car ‘profitable’, as CEO Schäfer says in his statement released on Wednesday.
