How a self-imposed bowl ban hit an Arizona State team trying to shed its recent past

New York Times

TEMPE, Ariz. — Safety Chris Edmonds and the rest of Arizona State’s leadership council received a text message Sunday morning. Arizona State, awaiting to hear from the NCAA in response to an investigation into alleged recruiting violations, had informed the Pac-12 and NCAA that it had self-imposed a one-year postseason ban for the upcoming season. His reaction: “It was upsetting.’’ Why Arizona State leadership waited to make this decision, as opposed to implementing a ban last season, isn’t clear. “It’s human nature.” He told the Sun Devils they still had an opportunity to get better every day, to make the best of a bad situation.
