Hollinger: Damian Lillard deal questions and Jrue Holiday trades that make sense
New York TimesUpdate: Jrue Holiday was traded to the Boston Celtics on Oct. 1. My guess is that the Bucks demanded silence on Holiday’s involvement as a condition of trade discussions and that the Blazers knew they could shop Holiday once a deal was done. There’s an irony to this trade: the Bucks essentially made a “do it for Giannis” trade after three years of “do it for Lillard” in Portland painted the Blazers into their current corner. Portland didn’t need to include his salary to complete the deal, although it would have kept them in the tax pending a Holiday move, and possibly complicated matters for next summer. A follow-up trade to drop one of their surplus seconds on another team to take Johnson’s $2.8 million salary would save the Suns several million dollars in tax payments, so keep an eye on that.
