Why did the Mizoram police kill five of their Assam counterparts?
India TodayOn July 26, violent clashes erupted at the Assam-Mizoram border and five personnel of the Assam police lost their lives in the exchange of fire between the forces of the two north-eastern states. As for the July 26 incident, the Assam government says Mizoram had begun constructing a road from Vairengte towards Rengti Basti in Assam, destroying the Inner Line Reserve Forest in Lailapur area. Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana, in turn, claims that the Assam police entered Mizoram’s territory and committed arson. While historians from Mizoram claim these forest areas were the hunting grounds of Mizo tribes, Chief Minister Zoramthanga insists that “large tracts of areas claimed by Assam to be within its constitutional boundary” have been used by the people of Mizoram for the past 100 plus years. “That’s the reason the Mizo farmers keep advancing towards the plains of Assam,” says Pijush Hazarika, Assam’s minister for water resources, parliamentary affairs, information and public relations and spokesperson of the state government.
