Mobile phone detection cameras catch drivers breaking the law 68,000 times in three months
ABCFour motorists have been caught on camera using a mobile phone while driving more than 30 times during a three-month grace period — racking up potential fines of more than $20,000 each. SA Police have issued 68,252 warning letters to motorists illegally using a mobile phone while driving during a three-month expiation grace period for five new detection cameras. "These mobile phone detection locations are not at traffic light locations, they are not picking up people who are stationary," Superintendent Fielke said. The mobile phone detection cameras captured 30,754 motorists using mobile phones while driving during the first month of the three-month grace period. She said the fines "might help" deter some motorists from using their mobile phone but did not think the new cameras would stop all drivers.
