Fear of bird flu, hot weather affect chicken price and sales, say sellers

The outbreak of bird flu in Andhra Pradesh and the belief that consumption of chicken during summer will have an adverse effect on health has led to a reduction in demand for chicken in Bengaluru’s meat markets. “After news about bird flu, I have stopped buying chicken for the past 10 days. However, meat sellers said that the panic induced by bird flu this time around is not as bad as it was in 2018 when there was an outbreak in Karnataka and Bengaluru. More than the fear of bird flu, people are buying less chicken as it is already so hot in Bengaluru,” said Suhaib Ur Rehman K., Co-founder of Protein Fresh, Shivajinagar. “Karnataka government has completely restricted the State-to-state poultry transportation but has not issued any advisory till date,” said Mahesh Kumar Yadav from KPFBA.
