National Party says Warwick Yonge was never endorsed as Port Macquarie by-election candidate
ABCThe National Party says it never endorsed a candidate it announced would represent the party at an upcoming NSW state by-election, only to dump him within days. On Sunday Nationals leader Dugald Saunders, deputy Gurmesh Singh and Nationals state and federal MPs from across the state's Mid North Coast presented Warwick Yonge to a media conference as the candidate for the by-election in the Liberal-held seat of Port Macquarie. "There's a process where the first of all the branch, then the State Electoral Council vote for, or nominate a candidate who is accepted, that then goes to the central executive," Mr Saunders said. 'Issues raised' Mr Saunders said there had been "a series of issues raised" in recent days that he "wasn't comfortable with the candidate having to deal with in the public eye". "The job now is to actually find the candidate for Port Macquarie who can represent the NSW nationals and win the seat," Mr Saunders said.
