With Erik Karlsson and Jacob Trouba off the market, three offseason scenarios for the Lightning
New York TimesTAMPA, Fla. — Those Erik Karlsson-to-Lightning dreams are done for good. When we wrote three weeks ago how Tampa Bay could land Karlsson in free agency, we made a very important caveat: it would be in Karlsson’s hands. Though Karlsson has had interest in Tampa Bay, if he wanted Drew Doughty-type money, then there was “no chance” he’d land with the Lightning. And we still don’t know whether Tampa Bay will get to clear Ryan Callahan’s $5.8 million cap hit off the books; the buyout period runs from June 15-30, though it would make more sense to try to trade him first, and there are several potential destinations. The Lightning, unable to find a trade partner for Callahan, could bring him back for the final year of his $5.8 million deal, knowing the savings they’d get from a buyout this season would be mitigated by the fact he’d still have a $1.56 million cap hit in 2020-21 when he’s not on the team.
