Govt must correct its mistake after SC order on ex gratia for Covid victims: Rahul Gandhi
India TodayHours after the Supreme Court ordered the Centre to pay compensation to families of those who died of Covid-19, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said this is a chance for the Narendra Modi government to "correct its mistake". Earlier in the day, delivering its order in a case related to Covid-19 victims, the Supreme Court said the central government must pay compensation to the family of those who succumbed to the viral infection. Recently, the government had told the court that it cannot pay an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to kin of all those who died of Covid-19 because it would "exhaust" the disaster relief fund. The court accepted this argument and has directed the National Disaster Management Authority to create minimum standards for ex gratia relief so that some amount of compensation can be paid.
