Documenting India’s iconic trees: from a giant sequoia in Jammu to a 600-year-old champaka tree in Karnataka

Somewhere between 359 and 385 million years ago, our world witnessed the birth of the first tree: Archaeopteris. My childhood memories of climbing trees, playing games with flowers and seeds, and writing fantasy stories inspired by my favourite tree giants drew me to urban ecology as an adult. The oldest individual tree is an alerce in Chile’s Alerce Costero National Park — 5,400 years old. Everyone must have a favourite tree It is very likely that we have a large number of trees in India that are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of years old. In this, books like Iconic Trees of India play an important role, inspiring us to reconnect to nature.
