NIL deals help Oscar Tshiebwe bring mom to the U.S. — and maybe pave way for another Kentucky season
New York TimesWith a simple message on Twitter — “I am open for business” — Kentucky star Oscar Tshiebwe announced over the weekend that he can finally take advantage of the name, image and likeness opportunities his teammates have enjoyed for months. He’s happy.” Now that Tshiebwe, his agent, his immigration lawyer and the Kentucky coaching and compliance staffs have helped him navigate the legal complexities of earning NIL income while attending an American university on an F1 student visa — which stipulates you cannot have a job — the best rebounder in decades, at long last, has a major payday coming. “Every conversation we’ve had — me, Cal, Nate, everybody — it’s been about how we can get this done so Oscar can help his mom,” said T.J. Beisner, who oversees all things NIL for UK basketball. From Day 1, that’s been the whole conversation with and TJ at UK, making sure Oscar’s eligibility and visa status are never jeopardized.” Oscar Tshiebwe is a leading contender for national player of the year. “We feel like we kind of cracked the code a little bit,” Beisner said, “and found some opportunities for a great young man who deserves it — and, honestly, for the next international student who comes to Kentucky and needs help navigating this.” Tsheibwe’s agent said they’ve already set up meetings with major corporations and a number of companies who want to build ad campaigns around Tshiebwe.
