Less than a PINT could tip you over the limit: Calls to lower the drink drive threshold to just a small glass of beer as road fatalities hit 13-year high

Daily Mail

Less than a pint could tip motorists over the limit if new calls for a lower drink-drive threshold succeed - as campaigners raised alarm about road deaths reaching a 13-year high. The National Police Chiefs Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners are calling for a change in the law to lower the drink drive limit It comes after road fatalities have soared to a 13-year high This would equate to only a small glass of wine or beer. The legal limit in England is currently 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood Sussex Chief Constable Jo Shiner, the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for roads policing, said: 'In policing we see the damaging impact of drink and drug driving all too often, and every fatality or serious injury which happens as a consequence of this is completely avoidable. Pictured are the number of fatalities in reported drink-driving collisions from 2012 to 2022 This graph, which uses data from the Department for Transport, shows drink-driving collisions as a proportion of all fatalities This graph breaks down the number of regular collisions and drink-drive collisions The number of drink-drive collisions as a proportion of all fatalities has wavered over the years Ms Allen, who is also Police and Crime Commissioner for Durham, said: 'I support a total drink and drive ban, both because drink driving is the cause of hundreds of unnecessary deaths on the UK's roads every year and because the impact of alcohol differs for every person, dependent on gender, weight and the type of drink.
