‘We did it!!!!’: Hollywood actors reach deal with studios to end strike

Months of industrial action have crippled the entertainment industry, halting hundreds of films and television shows. The Screen Actors Guild said on Wednesday that its strike would end at midnight after negotiators reached a preliminary deal on a new contract. The union said the new three-year contract was valued at more than $1bn and included increases in minimum salaries as well as a new “streaming participation”. The union’s negotiators reached the preliminary deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents media companies including Netflix, Paramount and Walt Disney. While Hollywood’s top stars earn millions, many less well-known actors said it had become almost impossible to earn a decent living in recent years, as longstanding pay structures failed to keep pace with inflation and the rise of streaming services.
