NAIDOC Week: News in Indigenous language enables understanding of local, global events

If you've ever tried to listen to the news being read in a foreign language, you would have a small insight into one of the challenges of life in an Indigenous community. "Where I'm from English is possibly a seventh language — it's not spoken at all at home," she said. She said the feedback she received from people in East Arnhem Land let her know that reading the news in Yolngu Matha helped them understand the world around them. "Even the elders and the senior members of my community say, 'We listen to the radio more now because now we know what's being said and what's happening in the day-to-day national and international news'." "It helps them understand the news better when they hear it in their language — it gives them a better understanding of what it's about."
