India committed to reach net-zero by 2070, achieve COP-26 goals
India TodayIndia on Monday reiterated its commitment to environmental goals as the country faces the menace of climate change with intense heatwaves hitting several parts. Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed interest to augment cooperation to face the future challenges of climate and weather along with developing models, application of forecasts in renewable energy and working together in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. "He expressed that science & technology has been one of the strategic pillars of bilateral partnership and suggested exploring possibilities of bilateral scientific cooperation in emerging areas of weather and climate research, specifically, on trends of regional climate extremes and variability of vulnerable areas including the tropics and high-latitudes," the Science & Technology Ministry said in a statement. The minister proposed to develop bilateral cooperation in the areas of-Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessments, early detection of tsunamis including ‘atypical tsunamis’ generated by under-sea landslides. The minister also called for cooperation in the field of crustal deformation monitoring using Global Navigation Satellite System data, tectonic settings of subduction zones in the Indian ocean, and integrating machine learning methods, capacity building activities to strengthen pre-disaster preparedness.
