Punjab bandh farmers protest: Commuter traffic crippled; rail, bus service suspended

Protesting farmers claimed that the Punjab bandh called by them on Monday was a massive success and people across the State supported it. Bhartiya Kisan Union president and a leader of SKM Baldev Singh Sirsa, who has been on protest with Mr. Dallewal, said the solidarity for Mr. Dallewal was the reason behind the success of the bandh. “Drivers of public buses said they are on strike in support of farmers and defeated the police’s plan to arrest us,” Mr. Sirsa, 83-year-old senior leader of farmers, said. All India Kisan Sabha Punjab secretary and SKM leader Major Singh Punnawal said the solidarity shown to Mr. Dallewal by the people was an indication to the Centre that it should be ready for negotiations. The commission’s draft added: “At this juncture, the Punjab government should hold a dialogue with the Union government for establishing a legal guarantee of procurement of MSP crops cultivated within the State.” Public transport hit Meanwhile, reports from Punjab suggest that the State witnessed a complete shutdown during the nine-hour ‘bandh’ called by farmers.
