Bangladesh shifting Rohingyas to Bhasan Char island that lacks basic facilities, reveal satellite images
India TodayAmid concerns being raised about safety and consent of refugees, Bangladesh has begun moving Rohingya families from refugee camps near Ukhia in Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh to Bhasan Char - an island formed from a build-up of silt in the Bay of Bengal only 20 years ago. Opposing Bangladesh's move to relocate thousands of Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char, humanitarian and human rights groups said the island is flood-prone and vulnerable to frequent cyclones. Bangladesh said transporting refugees to Bhasan Char will ease chronic overcrowding in its camps at Cox's Bazar, which are home to more than one million Rohingya, members of a Muslim minority who have fled neighbouring Myanmar in 2017 following a military-led crackdown. REMOTE ISLAND Located about 160 km as the crow flies from the main camps at Ukhia and Teknaf, the remote island of Bhasan Char was selected in October 2017 for keeping the Rohingya refugees and the preparations began by end of 2017.
