Sean Payton throws support behind Broncos QB Russell Wilson: ‘He still has it’
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Sean Payton had already hinted, without much subtlety, that he didn’t think highly of the previous coaching staff of the Denver Broncos. During the NFL’s annual league meetings in Phoenix back in March, Payton, who was hired to replace Nathaniel Hackett following his firing after 15 games in 2022, called the offensive film from the season “hard to watch.” That was after he took a dig at the previous staff’s clock-management struggles during his introductory press conference in early February. “That’s how bad it was.” Broncos coach Sean Payton held nothing back about last year’s Denver squad in a candid interview with USA Today. At the same time, he’s a great teacher, always wanting to teach.” Russell Wilson bumps fists with head coach Sean Payton during minicamp in June. GO DEEPER Why Broncos have warranted optimism about offensive line jump in 2023 The bottom line is that Payton, who told Bell he’ll be “pissed off” if the Broncos are not a playoff team in 2023, needs Wilson to be far better if Denver is to reach that goal for the first time since 2015.
