Is the 'Canberra Tax' the reason those in the national capital pay more for petrol, child care and car rego?

ABC

There has long been a rumour that Canberrans pay more than anyone else in Australia for everything from rent, to car registration and groceries. According to the Domain Rental Report, house rental prices rose 3.7 per cent in Canberra, making the median rent price $560 per week; Sydney's dropped 1.8 per cent to $540 per week. The latest figures cite $112 per day as the median cost for long day care in Canberra, which adds up to $560 for 50 hours per week — almost $100 more than the national median. In the ACT, the percentage of patients with out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic imaging services was 44 per cent — five times higher than South Western Sydney, at eight per cent. By comparison, Adelaide's second-largest council, the City of Salisbury, increased its rates by 2.9 per cent for the same 2019-20 period, for "very good environmental reasons."
