R.G. Kar rape-murder case: CBI files appeal in HC seeking death penalty for convict

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday filed an appeal before the Calcutta High Court seeking enhancement of life imprisonment to the death penalty for the convict in the rape and murder of the doctor at the R.G. Earlier in the day, the CBI, through Deputy Solicitor General Rajdeep Majumdar, opposed the West Bengal government’s petition seeking enhancement of punishment for the convict Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer. The Deputy Solicitor General opposed the State’s government plea before the same Division Bench on Wednesday maintaining that the West Bengal government did not have the right to appeal the trial court order on the ground of inadequacy. Hearing on January 27 The Division Bench said it would hear the CBI and the victim’s family and the convict through their lawyers before deciding on the admission of an appeal filed by the West Bengal government. Mamata unhappy Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed displeasure over the convict being awarded life sentence and said her government would approach the High Court seeking death penalty.
