Plea in High Court after 'expired' saline causes pregnant woman's death in Bengal
India TodayThe Calcutta High Court will hear a Public Interest Litigation on January 16 regarding the alleged administration of expired saline at a government hospital in West Bengal’s Midnapore, which left three pregnant women critically ill and led to the death of 21-year-old Mamoni Rui Das last week. The petitioner’s lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, informed the court that the supplier of the intravenous fluid had been red-flagged by another state government in March 2024 and banned for three years. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and the Left Front have staged protests in Midnapore, demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resign from her role as the state’s health minister. The High Court division bench directed the petitioner’s lawyer to inform the state Advocate General’s office to ensure representation by the West Bengal government during the hearing.
