Jill Ellis leaves U.S. national team with two World Cups and a resilient legacy
New York TimesOn Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Soccer announced that head coach Jill Ellis will step down at the conclusion of the national team’s victory tour later this fall. Plenty called for the federation to drop Ellis and hire a new head coach in the wake of that quarterfinal upset over Sweden — instead, Ellis essentially blew up the entire senior national team in order to get it right by the time the 2019 World Cup rolled around. “And so people now also want to potentially aspire to coach, doesn’t matter if it’s soccer, whatever sport, but you really hope that’s part of the legacy you leave behind.” As for the matter of her successor, Ellis said that there are a lot of “qualified and talented” women. But specifically, I don’t have something set in my head or on my mind right now.” In the meantime, there’s still the need to keep that number of losses locked at seven for the final few games of her time as the head coach of the U.S. women’s national team.
