Panthers’ playoff hopes: 320 rushing yards (570 total) and a huge game next week
New York TimesCHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Panthers broke a record just by showing up Saturday for the coldest home game in their history, then proceeded to run all over the Lions and into the team record books. The Panthers set team records with 320 rushing yards and 570 net yards behind an inspired performance by the offensive line and career days by running backs D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard. It was quite a turnaround for a team that six days earlier had managed just 21 rushing yards against the Steelers — the fifth-worst rushing day in Panthers’ history. “So it was just about being patient, let them attack their gaps and then hit the gaps they didn’t attack.” With Hubbard and Foreman hitting the century mark before halftime, the Panthers became the first NFL team with two 100-yard rushers in the first half since 2006 when Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor accomplished the feat against Indianapolis. “Everybody was disappointed and embarrassed by that, definitely on the offensive side of the ball.” Added Hubbard: “Go back and look at some of those runs — parted the Red Sea.” Here’s the crazy thing: The Panthers’ backs thought they could have had even bigger days if they’d made the Detroit defensive backs miss tackles.
