Think Covid-19 is mild among children? Study finds coronavirus turned severe for thousands in India
India TodayCovid-19 may have turned severe and even deadly for thousands of children in India, a new research has suggested. More than 2,000 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children have been reported in India, according to figures released by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Intensive Care Chapter in the country. "Acute infection of Covid-19 in children leads to two kinds of changes - a child may get pneumonia or there could be an antibody-mediated inflammation called MIS-C. Only prompt recognition can help catch the problem in time," said Dr Dhiren Gupta, chairperson-elect of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Intensive Care Chapter and Paediatrician and Intensivist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. 20% COVID-19 CASES IN KIDS TURNED CRITICAL: STUDY A recent study showed that 20 of 41 children admitted to hospital due to Covid-19 suffered from MIS-C. "This was a single-centre cohort study of 41 Covid-19 positive children 0-12 years of age hospitalised between 1 April 2020 and 31 July 2020," the study said. The findings were published in the Journal of Tropical Paediatrics under the title - "Unusual Clinical Manifestations and Outcome of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North India".
