India's coronavirus cases rise to 5.2 million with 96,424 new infections

India on Friday detected 96,424 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, pushing the country's tally to 5.2 million, data from the Union health ministry showed. On Friday, the health ministry said 1,174 people died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking total mortalities from the disease to 84,372. Meanwhile, Telangana recorded 2,043 fresh coronavirus cases and 11 fatalities, taking the tally of infections in the state to 1.67 lakh. Even as the coronavirus cases continue to rise in the country, schools in Meghalaya which are shut for six months due to the Covid-19 pandemic will partially reopen from next week for students to meet teachers to clarify their doubts, Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday.
