22-year-old gets 20 years in prison for raping minor, sharing video on social media

A Mangaluru court has sentenced a 22-year-old resident of Udupi to 20 years in prison and a fine of ₹1 lakh on finding him guilty for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl and sharing the video of the rape on social media. Maanu sentenced Ashwath, a resident of Hebri taluk in Udupi district of Karnataka, to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 for the offences under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He was also sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 for the offence under Section 363 of the IPC, two years of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 for offence under Section 12 of POCSO, and three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹40,000 for offence under Section 67 of Information Technology Act. The victim is also entitled to additional compensation of ₹4 lakh from the District Legal Services Authority under the Victim Compensation Scheme, the judge noted in his judgment dated January 10.
