Abuse in Victorian disability services widespread, report finds

ABC

A parliamentary inquiry has found abuse in disability services is widespread in Victoria, making 49 recommendations for reform. The Family and Community Development Committee heard abuse took many forms, from physical and sexual assault, verbal, emotional, and financial abuse, as well as neglect. Chairwoman of Parliament's Family and Community Development Committee Maree Edwards said people with disability had endured all forms of violence for too long. Call for mandatory reporting scheme Ms Edwards said a zero-tolerance approach towards abuse in disability services was needed, as well as a mandatory reporting scheme. It has also called for better data collection, so that Victoria Police included whether or not a victim had a disability in its reports, and the Department of Health and Human Services describe abuse as physical, sexual or neglect instead of simply labelling it as an "incident".
