Madras HC issues notice to TN Speaker on DMK plea seeking disqualification of 12 ex-rebel AIADMK MLAs

The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Tamil Nadu Speaker P Dhanapal in connection with a case filed by opposition DMK seeking to disqualify 12 former rebel AIADMK MLAs for voting against the government on the floor of the House earlier in February. The case pertained to the Speaker not disqualifying the then 12 rebel AIADMK MLAs led by former CM Panneerselvam for voting against the government during a confidence vote moved by Chief Minister K Palaniswami. Panneerselvam turned rebel in February and said he was forced to resign from the CM’s post by the now ousted jailed AIADMK interim general secretary VK Sasikala to enable her to take over the reins of the government. The DMK plea follows the Speaker's decision to disqualify 18 AIADMK MLAs -- supporters of ousted AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran -- under the anti-defection law for withdrawing support to the present government.
