Deadlock on farm laws continues but production and procurement go up
India TodayWith Parliament in session, the Farmers' union has started their own parallel parliament at Jantar-Mantar under strict protocol provided to them by Delhi Police. As per agriculture ministry data, normally Rabi sowing starts from the month of October and the total area sown in Rabi season by the end of the January 21 was 684.59 lakh hectares as compared to last year’s area sown of 665.59 lakh hectares, thereby indicating an increase of 19.01 lakh hectare area sown for the current year as compared to last year. Moreover, based on the proposal from the states, approval was accorded for procurement of 107.37 LMT of pulse and oilseeds of Kharif marketing Season 2020-21 & Rabi marketing season 2021 for the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh under price support scheme. Till May 2021, government through its Nodal agencies procured 6,91,581.09 MT of moong, urad, tur, gram, masoor, groundnut pods, mustard seed and soyabean having MSP value of Rs 3,621.03 crores benefitting 4,12,421 farmers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana and Rajasthan under Kharif 2020-21 & Rabi 2021. As per Punjab government's own record, the state has transferred Rs 21,010 crore as minimum support price to farmers till May 10, 2021.
