Parliamentary proceedings: Need for strengthening laws governing social media and OTT platforms: Ashwini Vaishnaw

The Hindu

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday emphasised the need to strengthen existing laws governing social media and OTT platforms and build a societal consensus on the issue. He said that due to the absence of such editorial oversight, social media had become a platform for freedom of the press, but it has also become a space for uncontrolled expression, which often included vulgar content. Parliament Winter Session Day 3 Updates: November 27 Mr. Vaishnaw acknowledged the distinct cultural differences between India and the geographies where the platforms originated. “There should be societal consensus on it, along with stricter laws to address this challenge,” Mr. Vaishnaw said.
