Octogenarian implanted with AI-driven, leadless pacemaker
The HinduDoctors of a private hospital recently implanted an artificial intelligence -driven, leadless pacemaker in an 86-year-old woman. According to a press release, unlike conventional pacemakers, this leadless pacemaker eliminates the need for chest incisions, generator pockets, or insulated wires. Ravi Kumar R., senior consultant and associate clinical lead, Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, MGM Healthcare, said the procedure was particularly significant for the patient as she faced multiple complications from her previous pacemaker, including nerve occlusions. Leadless, suture-less pacemakers are of value to elderly patients, those on blood thinners and immunosuppressed patients, such as those who have undergone a heart transplant, the release said.
