What is behind Mamata Banerjee's changed approach on Draupadi Murmu?
India TodayWest Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, one of the most prominent leaders of the Opposition, dropped a bombshell on July 1. Had BJP the divulged that former Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu would be their presidential nominee before, Mamata said, she would have supported her wholeheartedly, as she was a tribal woman representing a minority section. The Congress, which had in the past usually avoided accepting Mamata’s leadership in making any Opposition move, also conceded ground and let the TMC call the shots for the sake of Opposition unity. Even as parties like the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha kept leaving the flock and decided to rally behind Murmu for the obvious reason of upholding their tribal identity, there were some surprise entrants, like the K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s Telangana Rashtra Samithi, who felt Opposition unity was the need of the hour. With parties like the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Janata Dal, Biju Janata Dal and Shiromani Akali Dal now backing for Murmu for being a woman tribal candidate, the least Mamata could do was to make a statement like the one on July 1.
