Game changer in dry Gujarat? Police dogs that sniff out alcohol
India TodayThe cat-and-mouse game between the Gujarat police and bootleggers and alcohol consumers now has a canine angle to it. For the first time, the state’s K9 police dog squad has trained two 18-month-old Labradors, Adrev and Cemri, to ‘detect’ alcohol. Though sale and consumption of alcohol is illegal in the state, country-made or illicit liquor breweries inside residential colonies abundantly dot both the urban and rural landscape, as does the grey market trade by bootleggers, who smuggle in IMFL from other states. Transporting liquor in unsuspecting civilian baggage in trains, luxury or state transport buses, cars, trucks and passenger or commercial vehicles are some of the known smuggling methods that the police find difficult to intercept without credible human intelligence. “A detection dog, with the ability to smell alcohol or substances related to it, can prove to be a big deterrent for bootleggers,” said a senior police officer.
