Railways to establish 'Holding Areas' at 60 high-footfall stations
India TodayIn response to a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that resulted in 18 fatalities, Indian Railways has announced plans to implement 'holding areas' at 60 stations with high passenger traffic. IMPLEMENTATION OF HOLDING AREAS Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that both temporary and permanent holding zones will be established outside platforms to control passenger entry based on train departure times, thereby preventing overcrowding. DEVELOPMENT OF CROWD MANAGEMENT In addition to creating holding areas, the Railways will develop a comprehensive crowd management manual by consolidating existing guidelines. The Railways plan to launch a special campaign across all Delhi stations, soliciting input from various stakeholders—including hawkers, porters, street vendors, auto and taxi unions, passengers, and law enforcement agencies—to collaboratively address and resolve crowd management challenges.
