As the Steelers march toward opener, an already unsettled offensive line is tweaked
New York TimesPITTSBURGH — “They’ll be ready on the 12th,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said about his offensive line. The Steelers moved Chuks Okorafor back to right tackle for the entirety of Monday’s practice and put rookie Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle, where he played early in camp. It might not have been that big a deal if it weren’t so close to the start of the season, or if the Steelers didn’t repeatedly say left tackle is Okorafor’s more natural and better position, or if right tackle Zach Banner hadn’t been limited to 12 preseason snaps following ACL surgery and hadn’t stayed behind as the team went to Charlotte because he was “better served to get treatment at home.” But since that’s all true, it is becoming more of a concern, especially as the Steelers used Monday to make a switch they could’ve made a few days ago in a preseason game. Tomlin passed it off as Moore merely getting work at left tackle with the first team, but with the uncertainty surrounding Banner and his right knee, it could be a strong indication that the Steelers don’t believe Banner will be ready for the opener.
