Enhanced coordination among officials a must to prevent child marriage, says KSCPCR chief
The HinduKarnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairman K Naganna Gowda has emphasized the critical need for enhanced coordination among officials from various departments to stop the menace of child marriage in the Kalyana Karnataka region. He was speaking at a recent workshop for district and taluk-level officials from all the districts in Kalaburagi Division jointly organised by the Directorate of Child Protection, the District Legal Services Authority, the district administration, the Women and Child Welfare Department, the Department of School Education, the District Child Protection Unit and Gulbarga University to review the conditions of out-of-school children and individuals engaged in beggary and unauthorised coaching centres functioning in the region. Mr. Gowda reiterated that the responsibility is not just of the Women and Child Welfare Department or the Police Department to prevent child marriages but also every official concerned and those closely connected to people such as anganwadi workers, ASHAs, teachers, village accountants and panchayat development officers. The Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 was ineffective in preventing child marriages because of a lack of awareness and enforcement, Mr. Kosambe said and directed officials to take stern measures to prevent child marriages in their respective jurisdiction.
