For Blind Soccer Stars, Field of Vision Is Overrated
With all apologies to defending World Cup champion Spain, we all know Brazil is the leading force in global soccer and has been for decades. But Brazil's prowess on the pitch also carries over to blind soccer, where teams play five a side, the goalies can see, and the ball has bearings inside so the players can hear and sense it coming toward them. The world's best blind soccer players gathered for eight days in Hereford, England, at the Royal National College for the Blind, which packed several hundred fans into its Point4 sports complex to see Brazil pull out a 2-0 win over Spain in the finals on Sunday. In blind soccer, there are five on each side, a goalie and four outfield players. This is the fifth time that the World Blind Soccer Championship, which is governed by the International Blind Sports Federation, has been held.
