What happens when a rocket crashes into the Moon today
India TodayAll eyes will be focussed on the Moon on Friday when a three-ton rocket is sucked onto the surface by lunar gravity on the far side. Away from the prying eyes of telescopes, the second stage of the Chinese rocket will crash into the region not visible from Earth, carving out a new crater on the already heavily cratered surface. Scientists expect that Friday's crash will create a similar crater on the Moon as the Apollo mission had after the third stage of huge Saturn V rockets were intentionally directed towards the surface. Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, hovering above the Moon, has already captured images of the expected impact site on the far side of the Moon and scientists hope to find the depth and width of the new crater in images captured post-strike on March 4.
