Luke Walton’s players-first approach paying dividends, especially vs. Clippers

New York Times

Luke Walton is a players’ coach. “I think everybody loves the way he’s handled us.” Walton didn’t panic when the Kings struggled defensively in January, routinely allowing 120-plus points per game. Guard De’Aaron Fox credits the Kings’ recent surge to “executing the game plan.” “That and with the way Luke is, obviously coaches give you freedom,” Fox said. Divac was interested in Ime Udoka, who ended up in Philadelphia last season, or J.B. Bickerstaff, a good friend of Walton’s who is now the head coach in Cleveland. “That was absolutely huge and sometimes that’s what the responsibility of a second unit is, even if it’s not gaining a lead, just maintaining,” Walton said.
