Not much to cheer about for irrigation sector in 2025-26 Budget

HYDERABAD The budgetary allocation for the irrigation sector for 2025-26 appears to be no match to the government plans to complete several ongoing projects and taking up some new projects as part of its plans to increase the irrigation potential from the existing 73.57 lakh acres to 127.57 lakh acres in the years to come. The allocation for the coming fiscal includes about ₹11,800 crore for schemes — for the expenditure on the completion of several ongoing projects such as Palamuru-Rangareddy, Sita Rama, Devadula, Udayasamudram-Brahmana Vellamla and Bunadigani Kalva and taking up some new projects as Kodangal and Pranahita lift irrigation projects. The Minister for Finance stated that the State government was In socio-economic outlook for 2025, it is stated that though a massive ₹1.81 lakh crore was spent on the irrigation sector during 2014-2024, only 15.81 lakh acres irrigation potential was created. Meanwhile, Minister for Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy hailed the budgetary allocation for the irrigation sector stating that it was aimed at ensuring Telangana farmers get uninterrupted water supply from projects.
