Proposal To Include Advocates Under the Consumer Protection Act: DHCBA Passes Resolution Criticising The Move [Read Resolution]

Delhi High Court Bar Association has passed a resolution expressing strong criticism towards Centre's anticipated move of including Advocates under the ambit of the Consumer Protection Act. Passed during the Executive Committee meeting, the resolution states the following: 'Resolved that upon taking notice of reports appearing in the media about the proposed framing of Rules under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, so as to surreptitiously and in a most clandestine manner, include Advocates within the purview of 'service provider' under the Act, thereby making Advocates amenable to jurisdiction under the consumer fora.' In light of the same, the Bar Association has decided to make a strong representation before the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, seeking withdrawal of the said proposal. In addition to this, the members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association will be wearing white armbands on Thursday, as a mark of their initial protest
