H-1B modernisation rule: Key updates to simplify hiring skilled foreign workers
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will implement major updates to the H-1B visa program starting January 17, 2025. This overhaul, known as the H-1B Modernisation Final Rule, aims to simplify the hiring process for highly skilled foreign professionals while strengthening oversight. KEY CHANGES IN THE H-1B PROGRAM Employers hiring H-1B workers must now use an updated Form I-129, which becomes mandatory on the rule’s effective date. IMPLICATIONS FOR EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS The H-1B program is vital for U.S. employers to recruit foreign professionals in specialised roles requiring advanced skills. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou emphasised that these updates will help U.S. employers secure the skilled workers needed for growth and innovation while preserving program integrity.
