There are currently about 5,300 people on the elective surgery waiting list in Canberra and, of those, one-third of paediatric patients are waiting longer than clinically recommended for elective surgery, despite the Government's target of zero per cent. "We've seen a growth in demand that is outstripping every year, in significantly greater numbers, so it's certainly a focus and that's why there's been $6.4 million this financial year to increase numbers," she said. "The waiting list is very, very long so it's going to be quite a while I think," Ms Dunphy said.
