Supreme Court Protects Co-Accused Journalist In Param Bir Singh Case From Arrest
Live LawThe Supreme Court, on Tuesday, observed that Binu Ninan Varghese, a journalist, against whom the Thane Police had registered cases of extortion, including a case where the erstwhile Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Param Bir Singh was named primary accused, need not be arrested. In the case of extortion wherein Varghese is named along with Param Bir Singh, the Apex Court had already protected him from arrest vide order dated 11.01.2022 and asked him to cooperate with the investigation. Senior Advocate, Mr. Siddharth Bhatnagar, appearing on behalf of Binu Varghese informed the Bench that he was initially named in an FIR along with Param Bir Singh. Mr. Bhatnagar further apprised the Bench that the co-accused had been granted anticipatory bail while Varghese's plea was rejected, primarily, on the basis of the WhatsApp messages.
