Prime minister Boris Johnson may have finally learned his lesson after the headlong rush into reopening shops and restaurants last year which set the foundations for a calamitous second wave that left the UK with one of the worst Covid-19 death rates in the world. A report to Sage last week warned that even under the “most optimistic set of assumptions”, a third wave of Covid-19 infections was likely with at least a further 30,000 Covid deaths in the following months. But none of them show 100 per cent effectiveness in the real world – this is the gap the virus could exploit with a sudden, reckless re-opening.
