New York: Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka won their first career Grand Slam title with a hard-fought 7-5 7-5 win over Ash Barty and Victoria Azarenka in the US Open doubles final on Sunday. The win denied Barty in her bid for back-to-back US Open doubles victories after claiming her maiden Grand Slam doubles title with CoCo Vandeweghe in New York last year. “It was a pleasure to play with her and I hope we can continue to play together in the future.” Mertens and Sabalenka, who are both accomplished singles players, said they see doubles growing in popularity as bigger names get involved. “Because of the singles players playing doubles, the level going up and it’s more interesting to watch,” said Sabalenka, who was seeded ninth in singles.
